Heinrich Joseph Baermann (1784 – 1847) was a German clarinettist and composer.  The Divertimento for Clarinet & Orchestra, Op. 35 doesn't have a known date of composition.  Arrangements were made for accompaniment both with strings and full orchestra.  The work is comprised of three sections performed without interruption, each providing a small twist on the overall virtuosic flair.  The opening marking of "Tempo di marcia molto maestoso" speaks mostly to the accompaniment, as the solo clarinet rips through flashy, scherzando passagework.  The middle Andante section takes a slower tempo, although the clarinet part only becomes more dense with ornamentation.  The final Allegro section adopts a leggiero feeling in a lilting 3/8 time.  There are essentially no melodies to speak of, and the straightforward piano part merely provides the "skeleton" of beat and harmony, so the effectiveness of the work depends on the technical polish of the soloist.

Most of the solo part's technique closely follows traditional scale and chord patterns, and a couple of the ascending gestures reach the highest altissimo A6 pitch.  The majority of the work is in the keys C major, B♭ major, and D major/minor, with a little G minor and A♭ major.  The two time signatures used are 4/4 and 3/8.  The manuscript for the clarinet and full orchestra version of this work can be found in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Munich), and the clarinet and strings manuscript can be found in the Biblioteca di Archeologia e Storia Dell'Arte (Rome).

Suggested changes in volume, articulation, and breathing have been made by the editor on both the score and clarinet part; in such cases, dynamics and breath marks are in marked parenthesis, and slurs are made with dotted lines.  The score has a transposed clarinet part, so it is possible to read/perform directly.
