This is one of a group of four studies, each published separately, originally written for one performer who plays flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. Each of them may be played simply as written, by one performer, or by one performer with a pre-recorded tape accompaniment of the optional instruments, or by a group of performers, with one or more players for the principal and optional instruments. The second way, especially, is a valuable aid for improving intonation. The studies may be programmed individually or in combination with any or all of the other studies.If desired the clarinet may be accompanied by an E-flat clarinet and/or B-flat bass clarinet playing the same part (E-flat sounding a minor third higher). The bass clarinet should play only where indicated, the E-flat may play throughout. The principal and optional parts may be played by more than one performer.
